Our Story

Aldersgate is a multigenerational, multicultural, multilingual congregation. We come from many different walks of life with a wide variety of educational backgrounds.  Many of us live on the near-eastside, although our congregation extends to Greenfield, New Palestine, Greenwood, Beech Grove, Brownsburg, and Fishers. We gather together because we love God and believe Bible study and fellowship are a necessary part of growing in our faith. We are outward focused in our concern for our neighbors, community, nation, and world.

We got our start about 60 years ago when the Indianapolis eastside was still cornfields and before I-70 was built. As the city expanded, so did our desire to meet the needs of the growing eastside community and desire to grow closer to the heart of God.

Although our footprint is large, we are right-sized to utilize the strengths and talents of everyone desiring to engage in ministry. We believe that we are at our best when everyone is working together as the body of Christ actively serving others. We have dedicated and thoughtful volunteers committed to serving with cheerfulness and passion.

What happens when we meet

Our services typically begin with worship through music and end with preaching. We provide indoor worship but are following best practices for congregational safety during this COVID-19 pandemic.  Local governances still require wearing a mask and sitting socially distanced. Because of COVID-19, we’re striving to have everyone in and out in about an hour and have temporarily suspended congregational singing.

What you can expect

The atmosphere of Aldersgate is casual and comfortable and that’s reflected in how people dress too. When you enter expect to see a greeter who will welcome you and be pleased to show you around and answer any questions you may have. Our facility has two sanctuaries and hosts worship services in English and Swahili.  First Chinese Free Methodist Church will resume in-person services in our facility in May.

Disposable masks are available on entry if you forget yours, but our greeters will not be confrontational. A variety of hand sanitizing supplies is also available for your use as desired. If you’re one to get thirsty, be aware that our drinking fountain is temporarily out of commission because of COVID-19. Feel free to bring your own water or coffee if desired.

We offer Sunday School for all ages, and we have an active youth program, but for the time being, we’ve suspended the Sunday morning children and youth programs. They will resume at a later time in keeping with our plan for congregational health and safety as a result of COVID-19.
